FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who Volunteers?
Physicians including but not limited to Anesthesiologists, Orthopedists, Physical Therapists, Nurses, occasionally students of Health Sciences, Medical Students.

Where do Volunteers live?
There is limited housing on site at Bedford Hospital. Volunteer scheduling is dependent upon the needs of the organization and housing availability.

How long do volunteers serve?
A minimum of 4 weeks and up to a year.

Can family members come?
Yes, but please carefully consider brining a very young child. Teenage children can possibly volunteer as "student teachers" to the hospitalized children, or as transportation aides for Therapy.

What about expenses?
AMM is unable to provide stipends for short periods of volunteering, but longer periods may allow a stipend, decided on a case-by-case basis. While in the past, housing was provided free of charge, at this time a small fee is necessary to cover electric, replacement of linen, etc. Other expenses borne by the volunteer while in Mutate are transportation, food, recreation, etc. Expenses in this area for food and weekends recreation on the Indian Ocean are much less than you would pay in your hometown.

What about Insurance?
We recommend contacting your health insurance company for information on coverage while out of your country and in South Africa. AMM does not provide for insurance.
