Objectives

AMM’s primary objective is to improve medical services and support in the Transkei region of South Africa. Because of AMM’s first hand experience in the Transkei, we know which needs are not likely to be funded locally and will go unanswered. Projects are selected for their pertinence to the objective. We emphasize:

  • Developing and improving medical facilities
  • Recruiting professional medical volunteers to train local personnel
  • Providing medical supplies and equipment to support the program
  • Focusing on areas where government support is inadequate and no other private funding source is available.

The community-based training of local medical personnel is key. Volunteers recruited by AMM have been the main source of this work, but a Transkeian physician’s orthopedic residency has been funded by AMM. Short-term visits to the US and the UK for training have been provided to select professionals. Currently we are concentrating on specialized training for nurses and nurse practitioners in primary health care, intensive care and treatment of severe burns.
